The district of Gandhinagar serves as the administrative division of Gujarat its headquarters located at Gandhinagar, the state-capital. The district includes Gandhinagar city with three other suburbs namely Motera, Adalaj and Chandkheda. There are four tehsils located within the district namely Gandhinagar, Dahegam, Mansa and Kalol and a total of 216 villages.

Gandhinagar is a planned city. It was planned in 1965 by H.K.Mewada and Prakash M Apte, to serve as the capital of Gujarat. The streets of Gandhinagar are numbered and the cross streets names are marked with blending alphabets like “kh”, “k”, “gh”, “g”, “chh” and “ch” and “j” from East to West. The streets are crossed by numbers from 1 to 7 from North to South. All the streets in Gandhinagar cross after every kilometer.
The entire Gandhinagar city is divided into 30 rectangle-shaped sectors. Every sector has an area of 1 sq. km. Central Vista that lies just in front of Sachivalaya Complex has been developed as an ornamental garden at the riverside. A town park is also developed across the river front.There is a barrage that has been constructed very close to Indroda village which turns the river into an elongated lake comprising a park in front of it. Here, you can enjoy fishing, swimming and boating.
